I think it's more the increase in wealth (rather than knowledge) that affects collective religious belief. The poorer countries are more theistic than the richer ones. Religion seems to be used as a coping mechanism. So even within rich countries like the US, the richer, urban areas are more secular than the working-class, rural ones.
