I think it's important to distinguish between professional, academic philosophers, and the act of philosophizing itself. Philosophy is a tool that can be used for many purposes. Another relevant distinction would be between Analytic and Continental philosophical traditions.

But it's certainly an intriguing criticism. My suspicion is that professional philosophers would say either that they're doing what they can to help society (writing out the truth without dumbing it down), or that society is a lost cause because most folks aren't critical thinkers, and philosophers can't beat demagogues and sophistical charlatans at their game.
