I sympathize with that perspective. Certainly, most people try to pay as few taxes as possible, especially the rich. The reason is that governments tend to be more or less corrupt, so why entrust them with our hard-earned money? Sure, governments support society in lots of ways, but so does private enterprise. Either extreme, though, seems dubious, whether it be a government-dominated society or a laissez-faire one.
Libertarians and self-sufficient individuals seem to be meeting their nemeses in the young "woke" crowd of whiners. I suspect the problem is also that high technology and consumerism are infantilizing us, especially the younger generations that are growing up in it. And the monopoly power of the big tech firms has a hand in that process, to say the least.
