I suspect, though, that philosophy doesn't operate like science in solving problems with definite answers. Philosophy doesn't make progress that way because philosophical questions aren't empirical. They have no once-and-for-all answers. That doesn't mean philosophy's pointless, though. Philosophy is about recognizing our existential condition to build character and to prepare for death. Professional philosophy is another matter since it's scientistic or artistic/literary (in the analytic and Continental traditions, respectively).
"Happiness" can mean joy or contentment, so that debate in ethics, too, can go on and on.
