I started using Medium only in 2019. So when did Medium start to pay its writers? Only in 2017? If that's so, there would have been much less incentive to switch, say, from Blogger to Medium before 2017, even with the advantages you spoke of. The payment of writers is clearly what set Medium apart from the rest of the old blogosphere (but not from the newer competitors such as Substack).
