I say, with scientists, rather, that nature is indifferent to life's welfare. Obviously, nature isn't wholly hostile since nature supports life too. But was the ice age just tough love? How about the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs? Just more loving support? I think "indifference" or "neutrality" is a more fitting characterization.
