I say in the article that the areas we try to protect are all under assault by capitalism, so there's no guarantee they'll be protected. It's a struggle to hold onto modern progress when capitalism re-establishes the older kinds of rigid inequalities.

There's an economist whose name I forget, who pointed out another, rather ironic limit of capitalist freedom, namely the tyrannical structure of nearly every corporation that competes. There's supposed to be undirected competition between corporations, but within each there's a rigid hierarchy, making each a fiefdom.
