I remember the first time I had that experience of reading the four gospels side by side. I was an undergraduate in a Jesus studies class (using the historical-critical method). One of the textbooks was a hardcover Synopsis of the Four Gospels, which prints the gospel passages side by side in vertical columns, so you can see the word-for-word similarities and the ideological reasons for the slight changes that Matthew and Luke likely made to Mark.
