I like to think of it as the difference between a lifestyle for insiders, and virtue signaling for outsiders. To become mainstream, Jesus's absolutist message had to be compromised and diluted. So Christians no longer had to work hard to be spiritual since Jesus supposedly did all the work on the cross. Christianity became a status symbol, an elite instrument for manipulating mass opinion and behaviour. The cult became a politicized culture.
