I haven't read that, but it looks interesting. I see the connection with the conspiratorial thinking, with my point that consumerism sets the agenda.

The appeal to natural selection is the appeal to a biofunction, but civilization doesn't restrict personhood to animality. Our biofunction is set by our life cycle: we eat, sleep, defecate, mate, reproduce, and die. Not much of a meaning of life unless you're a Cynic or a social Darwinian conservative.

Our social function, in turn, is set by other forces. As Marx said, it might be set by the capitalists (the one percent) and by their ideological rationalizations such as consumerism.
