I got the idea from the rise of civilization that's implicitly at odds with nature-as-the-wilderness. It doesn't have to be a conscious torment, though. Unconscious loathing of nature's monstrous indifference and godlessness will do as inspiration for consumerism, for example, which has led to our current ecological plight. The conscious beliefs of the masses of religious hypocrites can be dismissed, of course, if we're trying to understand their behaviour.
