I don't think it's overblown at all. On the contrary, it's far too underplayed. All of Judaism was in a countercultural role at the time since Jews were subservient to the Roman Empire. These distinctions, between dominant cultures and countercultures are relative. Also, ancient Judaism wasn't monolithic. There were dominant and minority movements within Judaism, such as the Essenes, Pharisees, and Sadducees.
