I don't see it as just Jesus's message, though. The dynamic at issue is between mainstream culture, which compromises on the truth with noble lies to keep the peace, and the intellectual or spiritual counterculture. That dynamic came to the fore in the Axial Age, which posited a hidden, transcendent world beyond the mundane one we perceive. Jesus exemplifies the countercultural part of this dynamic, but so did Socrates, many of the Presocratics, the Hindu ascetics, and the shamans.
