I don't know if it's a religion. I call it a sex cult because it involves some mind games. We compartmentalize our public lives and these intimate moments of our private ones because they're in conflict and we don't want to deal with cognitive dissonance. Indirectly, the hypocrisy helps with our sex lives by boosting sex's mystique. Sex seems strange or taboo relative to the advanced, civilized conduct.
