I don't know how far that linkage takes you since I think both Christianity and secular humanism derive from existential confrontations that go back to the Axial Age and to prehistoric shamanism. It just depends on when you want to stop telling the longer history. Specifically, the urge to progress is based on horror for the wilderness, and on pride in human nature.
