I don't deny that math performs useful functions. What annoys me is the presentation of math in pedagogical contexts, as in math textbooks. I'm talking about the conceit that math is perfectly transparent, that there are no philosophical issues that crop up in math (the small print). This downplaying of philosophy in the stepwise systems that unfold on the math textbook pages makes the selling or the teaching of math into a magic trick.
