I came across the superorganism thesis in Howard Bloom's books, but I couldn't get past his whizz-bang writing style.

But, yeah, there's an interesting parallel there. I think of this in Lovecraftian and Kafkaesque terms, of the possibility of an alien superintelligence looming over us or hiding in plain sight. Whether that superintelligence is conceived of theologically, extra-terrestrially, or superorganismically is all grist for the mill.
