I base the distinction not on phenomenology but pragmatic epistemology and postmodern humility that are compatible with methodological naturalism. We deal with models that simplify their subject matters, and we have no reason to think they present the final, ultimate word on anything. The fact that we can't fit Richard Rorty's mirror of nature in our heads is all the basis we need for something like Kant's distinction.
