I also highlight a double truth, influenced by Leo Strauss' point about how the intellectual elites tend to hide the subversive implications of philosophy from the masses. This goes back to Plato who said the philosopher kings would need to rule with noble lies (myths) for the masses.

I also interpret this as a consequence of growing up and out of our childhood ability to completely suspend our disbelief. The older and more jaded we get, the harder it is to play without being self-conscious. So our adult mentality is split between wanting to play like we did when we were young and carefree, and seeing through all stories and metaphors, to the inhuman heart of what's going on in nature.
