I agree with these sentiments, although I think there's a split between Western and Eastern approaches to spirituality and philosophy. The former is more egoistic and moralistic than the latter. Jesus advocates a kind of altruism, but it's not entirely selfless since the bottom line for him is that we should obey God to receive our personal rewards in heaven. This is low-brow, exoteric spirituality that appeals to the ignoble lower classes or to those that lack the traditions of asceticism and jadedness that are more common in the East.
There are also some dubious extra-biblical references to Jesus, such as those in Josephus.
