I agree with much of this, but I'm not sure there's been no change in mental development for hundreds of thousands of years. Behavioural modernity may be that old, so there's certainly some continuity. But cultural changes accumulate, so I think we see stages in history, corresponding to youthful naivety, middle-age confidence, and old age jadedness. Cultures seem to go through these stages, and perhaps our whole species does too.
