I agree to some extent about the weakness of liberals. Certainly, there's a global backlash against liberal hypocrisies and against the shallowness of unpatriotic consumerism.
But what we learned from WWII is that authoritarianism is a siren call. It's quite the understatement to say that Trump isn't patriotic. He's just a narcissist who's having a field day with all the attention and power he's getting in his old age. Free societies and dictatorships both have their strengths and weaknesses. One obvious problem with centralizing political power is that it invites corruption, which turns the country into a kleptocracy, and that's what we see with Russia.
