I agree that what seem like superficial signs might be symptoms of deeper problems. And that's a good point about despair.

We should always remember that every social phenomenon has a multitude of causes. All we can do in explaining things is emphasize some causes that strike us as important. So I wouldn't exclude the appeal to despair to help explain the leftist oversensitivity. I'm just emphasizing some other causes in this series of articles.
