I agree that this is the more interesting philosophical reason for his apparent distress: his worldview is incoherent, so he struggles with this internal conflict.

He may end up just converting to conservative Christianity since that would be lucrative for a demagogue. I can also see him doing away with himself, if you know what I mean, since that would be a martyr's option.
