I agree that there are these dangers of totalitarianism, arising from collectivist level-headedness or pragmatism. I'd also explain the taboo of leaving your family for spiritual reasons as part of the cold war between mainstream societies and countercultures, or between the domesticated masses and the intellectual class of outsiders.
