I agree that it's natural for animals to seek shelter. But the imperial ambition behind the growth of civilizations seems to me beyond the evolutionary goal of maintaining an equilibrium with the environment. We view nature as wild in a pejorative sense, and we set ourselves in opposition to anything so inhuman, on progressive cultural grounds. Even if animals think implicitly in similar terms, they lack the means to apply that condescension towards nature. We have the intelligence, ambition, and opposable thumbs to turn our self-centeredness into a Luciferian war against our maker (nature). And we call that "progress."
