I agree that it's crucial to understand the difference between maps/models and terrains. That distinction takes us to Kant's distinction between mental representations and noumena (things in themselves). Is there a map which exhausts the reality of some terrain? If not, the map is always a distortion (from the noumenon's standpoint), an emphasis of some features and a hiding of others.
