I agree that cooperation is prominent in nature, along with dominance hierarchies. Perhaps conservative societies channel the authoritarian hierarchies, while liberal ones channel the cooperative, proto-moral instincts. This leads to the free-rider problem since a moral society is ripe for being exploited by predators or parasites (authoritarian "conservatives"). Which kind of society wins out in the end?
