I agree that atheism is strictly a narrow negation. As I recall, I was speaking loosely in this older article, generalizing about the positive philosophy that most atheists embrace (naturalism).

I address this question of atheism's scope at greater length in the first article linked below. I also argue that the rational methods that lead to athiesm also lead ironically to pantheism, in the second article below, which may or may not interest you.
