I agree, of course, that emotions can get the better of us, driving us to demonize our opponents.

American conservatives can say that liberals don't understand them, and merely stereotype them to preserve their woke illusions or smug sense of superiority. On the contrary, though, liberals can say that the truth of what Trump's supporters are like is plain, and that those supporters just don't want to know themselves because what they've become is appalling. Trumpers, too, have their illusions.

This reminds me of my article on the twin cults of Trumpism and Wokeness. There are indeed surely illusions on both sides. But one side's lack of self-knowledge seems far more destructive.
