I agree and that's well said, but the trouble is that we're capable of entertaining multiple perspectives. The cosmic or existential perspective takes us to that melancholy place you and I have described , but we can also slip out of that and adopt mainstream perspectives, just as we can identify with fictional characters when reading a novel. So how do we know which perspective to adopt? Is there a meta-perspective to judge them all?
Thomas Nagel makes a lot of that contrast between objective and subjective perspectives in The View from Nowhere.
