How would we survive without our consciousness? We'd be brain dead. We can be knocked unconscious or we can vary in our conscious states, as when we sleep. But we're so used to be conscious most of the time, we take it for granted, rather like how fish must take water for granted. A fish can be lifted out of the water and briefly survive in that alien state on land, too, just as we can survive being briefly unconscious now and again.
