How does that conflict with assuming that nature is metaphysically wild?

Are you saying natural selection is a cognitive process, as in a series of thoughts that amount to knowledge? That's metaphorical, at best, since it stretches the concept of cognition/knowledge. Daniel Dennett called evolution "algorithmic," but that was also a stretch because computation operates on symbols that are assigned meaning by interpreters.
