Hmm, we might be talking about different kinds of so-called "enlightenment." I agree that some kinds of hyper-rationality might be self-defeating, and knowledge of troubling facts would likely be alienating. But that knowledge could also be sublimated for artistic purposes, which I think was the upshot of Nietzsche's philosophy. The lament should be that artistic countercultures can't easily be sustained; instead, they're assimilated and degraded for mainstream consumption.
