He was probably quoting a Jewish prophet, or at least the gospel author was doing so. The mold of the countercultural prophet was well-established in Judaism before Christianity, as it was in Greek culture, with the Presocratic philosophers who may in turn have been channeling the Jains and Hindu ascetics.
