Good points. Social conventions do indeed seem necessary to keep large societies going, and those conventions might have to be arbitrary and stipulated. But are religions and capitalism arbitrary in that sense? Driving on one side of the road or the other, as is custom, doesn't affect a person's character, but religion and capitalism do.
