Good point, but we probably shouldn't scapegoat the leaders. The Republican voters must have supported McConnell in doing so, out of spite and because they were radicalized by right-wing demagogues. Those Republican voters are opposed to "the establishment" and to secular liberal elites. Nothing Democrats do, then, can be good. These "conservatives" don't believe in social progress, and many of them are just waiting for Jesus to return.
