Your third point about the need to change the rules to make politics more fair clashes, I think, with the realism I bring to bear. Perhaps the only way for social progress to happen in the US is for liberals to just pass their agenda when they're in power, without worrying about selling it (because they don't know how to sell anything). They need to let the policies speak for themselves so that even the conservative base eventually approves of them in the way that they approve of Medicare and Medicaid.

The danger is that Republicans can overturn the legislation before it comes to fruition when they're in office. And another danger is that it may be too late for the Democrats: half the country no longer trusts them no matter what they do because they sold out long before Trump came on the scene.
