Good point. I think he acts like a magician, too, in using his voice and his hand motions to mesmerize the audience. He wants to make science seem marvelous in its ability to unravel nature's mysteries. And indeed, this way of viewing modern humanistic progress is compelling. But science shouldn't need to be sold with magic tricks.
