There's certainly an evolutionary advantage to sociality, or to what Daniel Dennett calls the "intentional stance." We understand things best when we reduce them to our level, when we personify and socialize with them. Magic may be a by-product of that stance since we conjure up ways of domesticating those posited spirits. Magic is in some ways proto-technology.
