From a pragmatic, neo-Kantian perspective, everything is unknowable, in a sense. Our models are never adequate to the noumenon. The map always simplifies the terrain. So we might at least have the same kind of rough sense of the monster behind the scenes, as we have of leaves, rocks, ears, and the like. The noumenon is always behind the scenes of our qualia and of our act of understanding.
