Folk psychology succeeds as a model of the behaviour of fellow intelligent life forms, but theism fails badly as a model for explaining natural events. Theism fails because its terms aren't well-enough defined. They're unfalsifiable metaphors, so the theistic model is more like a self-reinforcing delusion than a scientific theory.

We know what "belief," "desire," "courage," "cowardice," "anger," "sadness," and "happiness" mean. We know the signs to look for to confirm the presence of these inner states, and positing them helps us explain social patterns.

There's no such utility for theism, unless we're talking about the political utility of cynically managing large populations of dupes. And God is by definition transcendent and ineffable, so there's no point in reducing God to something tangible and testable.
