Fareed Zakaria made a similar point in one of his specials on racism. He pointed out that the Nazis were influenced by America's discriminatory immigration laws and eugenics pseudoscience. I was amazed to learn that these things started in the US or at least that there was a lot of overlap between German and American racism after WWI. Of course, you had the Ku Klux Klan, and Henry Ford's "The International Jew" was also influential.
