Fair point. I criticize modern secular cultures, too, though. A lot. My point, then, would be that modern humanism at least foregrounds these values, whereas theism puts them in the background, or appeals to our human strengths as means to the ends of serving God and getting into Heaven.

As flawed as modernity is, it's progressive in a way that ancient conservative cultures weren't. In the ancient and medieval worlds, progress would have seemed like an impudent fantasy since the aim, rather, was to submit to what were presumed to be the divinely driven cycles of nature.
