Evolution has shaped us so we don't like to suffer, but we also shape our evolution as we begin to act like godlike animals who've created an artificial world that supervenes on nature. So the fact that an impulse is natural doesn't automatically make it right. Some kinds of suffering might be bad and pointless, but others might be necessary and noble. The question for me is whether enlightenment entails a special kind of suffering or, rather, only a form of peace or contentment.

I see that you also say, more carefully, that the self doesn't exist as a singular perceiver or as a constant essence. That's not the same as saying that the self is unreal or a delusion. The self does exist as the pattern of activity in the brain and, more widely, as the body that protect the brain and mind.
