In fact, the early positivists understood this distinction, and they viewed questions of value to be noncognitive and therefore pointless.

I agree, though, that this is a dead horse--in philosophy. Unfortunately, that hasn't stopped the smug scientism in scientific circles. So these sorts of articles seem useful every now and again, to explain why this academic culture war persists.
