Did the positivists cling to their extreme empiricism after they refuted it? Analytic philosophy did move on.

But your basic point stands, I think, which is that we should be humbler about our intellectual creations. We cling to them often for emotional reasons rather than because they're flawless pieces of logic. Elsewhere, I compare worldviews to snail shells. They grow around us and become part of us. Hermit crabs, though, can move from shell to shell, trying on different homes.
