Democracy gave the US Trump’s presidency for four years. Democracy is no meritocracy because the voters tend to differ massively in quality. Also, democracy is prone to being overtaken by demagogues and charlatans. Self-help therapy, for example, is more popular than philosophy because philosophy is harder to master. That doesn’t mean self-help articles are superior to philosophical ones; it means the former are dumber and more sentimental than the latter.
