Conceding your account of Cobain, are you sure there's no further comparison there to be made to Jesus? You don't think Jesus was turning himself into a goner by stirring up a Jewish revolution or by adding fuel to that fire which eventually exploded in the Jewish-Roman wars? Upsetting the peace under Roman rule was inherently dangerous, as is taking drugs as a rock star. The comparison seems sustainable.

Yeah, Cobain sold out for a while, but he seems to have felt guilty about having done so. Jesus may have felt similarly guilty as his following increased, and as he learned what it took to impress desperate folks.

Likewise, you don't think Jesus's hippie aspects made him a lost soul? How would Jesus have fit into the Roman Empire? (Of course, that side of his message would have been excluded from the canonical gospels, after the destruction of Jerusalem.)

My objection here, though, as you can tell, is directed more towards the egregious hypocrisy of exoteric Christianity. Mystical religion is usually more intellectual and consistent, so it's not so vulnerable to mere critical statements of the obvious.
