Compared to better functioning social democracies, the US is overall libertarian and individualistic, I think. That's why its systems fell on their face in trying to deal with Covid-19: Americans no longer think collectively as a united people. They demand their freedom to do their own thing (to wear a mask or not), so they lack national coordination. As a result of those libertarian social divisions (and lack of empathy or respect for science and expertise), the virus swept through the country.
